This report from the European Commission presented an overview of the problem of cell phone usage while driving. This literature review examined the risks of cell phone usage while driving, and the size of the problem in relation to collision and death rates. This review also summarized relevant science regarding this topic. In particular, it was noted that science can provide explanations of the effects of driver distraction on driving behaviour, age-related effects, and the effectiveness of interventions designed to decrease the use of cell phone use while driving. Lastly, this report highlighted the importance of continued research and data collection to inform the design of solutions and countermeasures to reduce this problem.
